Symptoms Of Scarlet Fever In Children

Scarlet fever is a kind of bacterial infection in children which predominantly occurs in winter season, It is caused by a bacteria which is called as group-A streptococci of bet hemolytic type that elaborate erythrogenic toxins.

Symptoms of scarlet fever in children

  • It takes 3 to 5 days to show first signs of infection.
  • Skin desquamation may begin in middle of the second week after the onset.
  • Patient exhibits severe pharyngitis and tonsillitis.
  • Fever with chills.
  • Vomiting.
  • In intra oral examination you will see highly erythematous throat and exudation can be seen.
  • Lymph node related to neck can be enlarged and tender.
  • Classical sign of diffuse , bright, scarlet to dusky red skin rash which aooears on the second or third day of the illness.
  • Rash fades after 3 days.
  • Rash is due to damage to walls of small capillaries in the skin which causes it's dilation and hyperemia.


Mouth Symptoms of Scarlet fever

  • Stomatitis of the mouth which is called as stomatitis scarlatina.
  • Throat is red and erythematous.
  • Temples and cheek are flushed and red.

  • Tonsils ans faucial pillars are usually swollen and may be covered with grayish exudate.
  • Strawberry tongue- Papilla are edematous and hyperemic, White coating can be seen over the tongue. Papilla will project over the coating as small red nobs which gives the impression of strawberry tongue.
  • Raspberry tongue- after coating is lost you can see deep red glistning and smooth tongue, swollewn hyperemic papilla can be seen. 
  • Oral mucosa- oral mucosa is congested and bad odor is seen. in sever conditions ulceration of cheek mucosa can be seen 
  • Hypoplasia of teeth may be seen if condition occurs during tooth development.
