What is Dipping Tobacco?
Dipping tobacco is a form of smokeless tobacco; In this form of practice person keeps a finely grounded or shredded tobacco leaves in the labial mucosal fold ( between lip and gums).
Gradually the juice of the tobacco is absorbed by the fine capillaries present in the buccal mucosa. The nicotine present in the dip reaches into the blood and person feels effects of nicotine.
Some times this tobacco is mixed and rubbed with small amount of lime (calcium hydroxide (Mostly practiced in India) to increase increase the irritation of the mucosa which lead to increase in absorption of the tobacco juice.
Chances of Mouth Cancer By Dipping Tobacco
Dipping tobacco causes cancer of various parts of mouth. It can cause cancer of cheek, cancer of
gums, cancer of tongue, cancer of lips, cancer of tongue. cancer of palate.
There is no predicted time period for cancer to occur, but it is said to have lesser potential to cause cancer then it's smoked form of tobacco; but this does not mean it is not lethal. some cases have been up with the cancer in less then 3 years of dip use.
Prevalence is more in males as it is habit of males.

Signs and Symptoms Which Indicates Mouth Cancer From Dipping Tobacco
- Age- Majority of cases are of age of 50 yrs or older.
- Sex- 2:1 Male to female ratio. due to habit differences.
- At first person may feel growth, swelling and ulceration.
- Most common sites inner lips and buccal mucosa.
- As the lesion will advance it becomes ulcerative and infiltrative type.
- Surface may range from granular to pebbly to deeply creviced.
- Base is broad.
- Border is ragged and irregular.
- Color is red with white keratin like distribution.
- When palpated feel firm and it may get fixed to underlying tissue as the lesion advances.
- In advanced stage it may infiltrate in adjacent tissue.
- Metastasis is seen in sub mandibular lymph nodes.
Treatment options-
- Treatment usually lies in surgical management of the problem.
- Followed by Radiotherapy.
- Chemotherapy have very less effect in this type of cancer.
